Castel Monastero

Castel Monastero

Become part of one thousand years of history at Castel Monastero. It has been a monastery and village, a castle — now it’s the ultimate country retreat and spa.

Originating in medieval Tuscany, Castel Monastero is first mentioned in 1044, under the name ‘Sarna’. In the 1050s, a connection forms with the nearby Berardenga Abbey.

Home to the Berardenghi family over the next two centuries, it was then besieged and conquered by various forces; after that it became a country home for one of Italy’s noblest families; then restored to its ancient splendour.

Now, it welcomes guests looking for a romantic, private, luxurious experience.

Drink famous Chianti surrounded by the vineyards it came from.

Enjoy several wine tasting tours, traversing the rolling hills of Senesi or the valleys of Orcia, Ombrone and Arbia. You’ll visit the Mercatale in Greve, one of the oldest markets in Italy; Monteriggioni, a magnificent fortified medieval citadel; and historic Caffè Fiaschetteria Italiana, founded in 1888 by the inventor of Brunello.

Eat at the gourmet Gordon Ramsay Contrada and La Cantina restaurants. Try the succulent Chianina beef, local oils and cheeses, and of course, that fine Tuscan wine.

The Castel’s rooms are traditionally furnished to capture the Tuscan scenery, with glorious views of the surrounding fields, vineyards, and the medieval piazza.

The villas – Del Casato, Del Poggio, Del Orto, Delle Scuderie – are individual masterpieces of Tuscan rural architecture. Porticoed entranceways, herb and flower gardens, panoramic windows, and interiors that combine rustic elements with sophisticated style.

The spa is a beautiful, harmonious place to rejuvenate and get back into shape. Designed exclusively for the spa, the Aquae Monasterii course features a high-density sea oil pool — you won’t believe how good it makes you feel.

In the peaceful woods around the spa, join an intensely energising yoga session, led by internationally-renowned instructors.
